Konecranes waste to energy cranes
Customer story

Konecranes supplies waste to energy plant with waste cranes and remote operating station

Hamburger Hungária Kft. constructed a new waste to energy plant. For this they needed different equipment like heavy duty waste-to-energy cranes, several service monorails and a maintenance crane.

In 2016, a modern, environmentally-friendly power plant began operating to continuously meet the energy demand of a paper mill and simultaneously utilize the paper production by-products in the form of energy. Hamburger Hungária invested in a new refuse derived fuel (RDF) preparation plant with a capacity of ~100.000 to/an and a new bunker building. The plant started operations in the beginning of 2023.

About Hamburger Hungária

Hamburger Hungária Kft. is a member of the Austrian family-owned Prinzhorn Group and within part of the Hamburger Containerboard Division. They are a leading brown containerboard paper manufacturer in Europe, producing 700 000 tons of advanced recycled containerboard paper on its two paper machines in Dunaujvaros each year. Eighty percent of the paper produced is exported to the central, eastern and southern European markets.

The waste paper-based production prevents paper from going to waste disposal sites by recycling, making Hamburger Hungária one of the most significant contributors to environmental protection in Hungary.

Hamburger Hungária's technology-leading paper mill in Dunaujvaros has become one of the most competitive units in the European paper industry.

Scope of supply

Konecranes supplied the crane runway, two GL heavy-duty waste cranes, service monorails in the waste bunker and a CXT maintenance crane in the fuel preparation hall. The waste cranes are equipped with 8 cu m orange peel grabs and a smaller cleaning grab attached to the auxiliary hoist. The fully automated cranes operate simultaneously and can also be manually controlled in the Remote Operating Station (ROS) via camera views or by radio controls for service tasks. With this advanced technology, Hamburger does not need a pulpit room with direct visual observation of the bunker from the control room.

Konecranes also delivered the complete camera systems in the bunker with several views down from the crane and from different spots in the bunker. The bunker level can be detected by laser scanners on the crane and visualized in 3D in the main user interface. The height level in the hopper and the transfer boxes are detected by radar sensors. Konecranes also delivered the dumping gate control system including traffic lights and truck detection sensors.
